Design Process

Each project will have its own nuances and these will directly affect the process of reaching the manufactured solution. The following phases are an overview of the process considered in any project.

Design Brief

After the initial meeting, a brief will be established which outlines the scope of the project and details and aspects to be considered in relation to product

Research

User needs & desires.
Physical & cultural environment in which product will sit.
Prior art & state of the art technology.
Comparison to existing products or existing market opportunities.
Sustainable solution approaches.
Optional target specifications.

Idea Generation & Concept Design

This process involves idea generation, teasing out of initial ideas and concepts and exploration of possible broad solutions for the project. Often emphasis will be placed on form generation alternatives and typically an examination of options or implications for the user interface. Generally this will be presented in the form of 2 dimensional drawings/sketches.

Block Models

Block models/massing model may be produced to provide the client with an opportunity to assess the 3 dimensional form, sizing, feel etc. of the proposed concept design.

Design Development

Establish technical constraints.
Define manufacturing approach.
Design is developed and refined.

Test Rigs

Design, construct and test rigs to establish preferred solutions to technical issues.
Model and test alternative forms to test user interface

Detail Design

Select & finalise component configuration, sizes and geometry.
Explore process and rationalise options for assembly.
Design assembly detail: welding, joints, snap fits, fixings, seals, etc.
Finalise product form for manufacture.

3D CAD Modelling

Model the product and its components in 3D CAD.

Prototype

Rapid prototype technologies can produce simulant parts of the product as it would be manufactured. Allows hands on testing of the design prior to manufacture.

Analysis

The 3D CAD models can be used for analysis of the final product:
Flow/filling of injection moulded components, strength of components, etc.

Documentation

Develop detailed engineering drawings and documentation so that the design intent is carried through to the manufactured product.

Liaison with Manufacturer

We will assist you if you choose external manufacturing facilities.

Inspection of Initial Production Run

Examination & review initial production run to confirm that the manufactured product is meeting specifications.
